PIVOT: Vox Populi

January 24, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 7:30pm, repeating until January 27, 2019

The adventurous San Francisco Performances’ PIVOT series begins an intensive four-day festival presenting artists and works with political observations and meanings.

The festival begins with Israeli pianist Ran Dank performing Frederic Rzewski’s major work from the 1970’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated—a set of 36 variations on a political song popular in Chile prior to the overthrow of Allende.

The festival’s second day presents the beloved Jazz singer Paula West singing a full program of Bob Dylan songs.

The festival’s third day presents singer/songwriter, Gabriel Kahane who returns to PIVOT with his newest song cycle, 8980: Book of Travelers, which offers portraits of people he met on the 8,980 mile trip he took the morning after the 2016 presidential election.  The day after the 2016 presidential election, singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane boarded a train at Penn Station and traveled 8,980 miles around the continental U.S., talking to dozens of strangers in an attempt to better understand his country and fellow citizens. The resulting album and stage piece, 8980: Book of Travelers (Nonesuch Records), is at once a prayer for empathy and reconciliation, as well as an unflinching examination of the complex and often troubled history of the United States.

The festival’s fourth and final day presents bass baritone Dashon Burton who steps out of his acclaimed role as a classically trained concert and choral artist and member of Roomful of Teeth, with a program of Civil War and Civil Rights anthems of protest, called Songs of Struggle and Redemption.
