ELEMENTS – Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble
April 21, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm$15 – $25
This April, Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble presents ELEMENTS, a concert of dramatic choral music about Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The program will include an eclectic mix of choral works in a broad range of musical styles from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
The performances will feature music ranging from silly to sublime, subtle to powerful, by Johann Strauss II, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Gustav Holst, Samuel Barber, and Ola Gjeilo, among others, including two new works written for Voci by the Ensemble’s composer-in-residence, Julie Herndon.
In celebration of Earth Day 2018 (April 21), the program offers our appreciation and respect for the earth and its elements. Voci also honors the victims of the Northern and Southern California firestorms with a premiere of “Fire-Flowers” by Voci Artistic Director Mitchell Covington, based on a poem by Pauline Johnson-Tekahionwake about the California Fire Poppy, which only blooms after a fire.
Voci will perform two new works by Bay Area emerging composer, Julie Herndon, including a premiere of “but now,” her second composition for Voci. Herndon is completing her term as Voci’s New Works Project composer-in-residence. “but now” offers a hypnotizing metaphorical climb up Mt. Everest, and was inspired by Herndon’s first sight of the famous mountain while hiking in Nepal in 2017. “The piece explores that sense of incremental movement, with each voice moving at its own pace in a slow canon, one voice climbing after another in gradual procession.” Voci premiered Herndon’s first New Works Project commission, “am an ocean” in spring 2017, and will perform both new pieces at the upcoming April concerts.
